    Nic Cowan

with: Brian Collins Band and Luke Mitchem

    nic-cowan-palace

His Southern Ground debut, Hard Headed, is winsomely crowd pleasing but unclassifiable—neatly mixing southern rock, country, soul and R&B without being hewing to any single style. Cowan’s gritty, soulful voice—redolent of whiskey, cigarettes and dues paid—completes the package, announcing the arrival of an artist ready for bigger stages.

    Harmonic Blue

with: Shane Tully and Sarah Castille

    harmonicblue

Harmonic Blue is is a musical collaboration which was conceived in August 2010 in Baltimore, Maryland. Harmonic Blue composes music containing a wide variety of undertones ranging from Rock, Blues, Folk, Soul, Jazz, and Pop. The band currently has 4 standing members whose individual eclectic tastes define the sound of Harmonic Blue. Singer Zach Field’s sultry yet gritty vocals are rooted in soul and blues music. Lead guitarist Anthony Ajluni derives his sound from influences Stephen Stills, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimi Hendrix, and 60′s pop such as the Zombies. Drummer Sam Balcom comes from deep study and passion for jazz music which in combination with rock styles pushes Balcom into territories similar to Mitch Mitchell, Steve Gadd, Steve Jordan, and Elvin Jones. These varying styles are woven together beautifully by melodic bass playing by Gabe Bustos, who cites James Jamerson, Pino Palladino, Danger Mouse, along with many non-musical experiences as sources of inspiration.

Fresh off recording their upcoming E.P. entitled Villa Borghese (set for release in early April), Harmonic Blue is emerging in the Baltimore/D.C. Metro area as an exciting fresh new mixture of many retro influences.

    BLACKDOGPROWL

Black Dog Prowl is screaming guitars, door-busting drums, driving bass and powerful vocals. Think of the musical lovechild of Led Zeppelin and Soundgarden combined with the vocal styling of Kurt Cobain and Jim Morrison. Gritty vocalist and guitarist Josh Finver fronts this Washington, D.C., based four-piece that features Robert Peters on lead guitar and an explosive rhythm section made up of bassist Schuyler Allen and drummer Enzo Ferroggiaro. Though the band takes inspiration from rock pioneers that have come before, Black Dog Prowl has a sound that is very much its own and a high-energy live show that is among the best the nation’s capital has to offer.

    Jenny Owen Youngs

    JOY_9401a

Coming up strong behind R. Stevie Moore as the most talented singer/songwriter to be based in the nondescript bedroom community of Montclair, NJ, Jenny Owen Youngs fuses Liz Phair’s perceptive and brashly funny lyrics with the orchestrated folk-pop of Regina Spektor and Erin McKeown, adding just a hint of Nellie McKay’s jazzy cabaret leanings and Cat Power’s throaty, confessional angst. Born in New Jersey in 1981, Youngs first picked up the guitar at the age of 14 and attended the music program at the State University of New York, having enrolled during a period in which the previously obscure art school was single-handedly populating what would become the entire New York “anti-folk” scene: besides Youngs and Spektor, Jeffrey Lewis, Langhorne Slim, and the Moldy Peaches’ Adam Green, and Kimya Dawson were all SUNY-Purchase graduates.

    Rich Robinson (Black Crowes)

    with: Amy LaVere

    RICHROBINSON

When the Black Crowes either broke up or went on indefinite hiatus (it depends on who you ask and sometimes when you ask), guitarist Rich Robinson spent a few months with his family at home, figuring out what to do next. There were some deaths in his extended family that just added to how strange it was adjusting to life without the Crowes, and how strange it was to be working on projects without his brother, vocalist Chris Robinson. He ended up building a studio in his Connecticut home and worked on his production chops. New avenues were opening, too, with Robinson composing the soundtrack for the 2001 film Highway while seriously working on his painting for the first time since the Crowes had formed.

    Purity Ring

    with: Ava Luna

    purityring-palace

Purity Ring is the futuristic pop project of Corin Roddick and Megan James. Purity Ring makes lullabies for the club, drawing equally from airy 90s r&b, lush dream pop, and the powerful immediacy of the very best modern indie pop. Megan James’ remarkable voice is at once ecstatic and ethereal, soaring joyfully through Roddick’s carefully chopped beats, trembling synths, and past her perfect counterpoint – a ghostly pitched-down vocal which both underscores hooks and renders the entire musical backdrop beautifully alien.

    Polica

    with: OUTPUTMESSAGE (LIVE)

    Polica-Palace

POLIÇA began as a collaboration between fellow Gayngs’ members Channy Casselle and Ryan Olson in June of 2011. By July they had completed 11 songs, made the key additions of drummers Ben Ivascu and Drew Christopherson, bass player Chris Bierdan, and headed into the studio. After Mike Noyce (Bon Iver) lent his voice on Lay Your Cards Out and Wandering Star, the record was brought to Austin, TX to be mixed with Jim Eno (Spoon). In a few days, the LP was completed and the band Poliça was formed. On stage, the original beats composed by Olson play amongst Channy’s passionate vocals & an intense rhythm section, that lead to a description somewhere in the area of electro-r&b goth-pop.

    Wildlife City

    wildlife

Five medical students, all bored after only two months of learning the ins and outs of the human body, formed Wildlife City in a cold, cramped practice space behind a lecture hall. With members from what seems to be a random sampling across the United States (New York, Kansas, Michigan, Ohio and California), it’s no surprise that their influences are as varied as the Black Keys, to Mozart, to Queen. However, once these five students began playing, their collective talent transcended their differences in musical background, making it evident that they would become more than just another student band.

“And while the latter motions toward the skittering Midwestern pop-punk of the Promise Ring and recently reunited Get Up Kids as much as Buzzcocks, its final gasp echoes (as though in tribute) that of Wavves’ Nathan Williams, another former lo-fi kid who’s made impressive use of the studio. “Should Have” opts however for the suburbs instead of the beach and the unabashed melodicism of Gin Blossoms over Nirvana, Baldi’s voice moving even lower. 7.9/10″ – Pitchfork

    Girl In A Coma

    GIRL-B

San Antonio’s Girl In A Coma have left a permanent tattoo on the hearts of music lovers with their piercing songs and nuclear performances. They’ve blazed a singular trail since Nina Diaz joined the band at age 13 and have found champions and comrades along the way including Joan Jett who signed them, Morrissey, Sia, Tegan and Sara, The Pogues and Amanda Palmer who have hand selected them for tours. In addition, Robert Rodriguez asked them to compose one of the key songs for his film Machete last year. All the while, they have been building one of the most impassioned and diverse fan bases in music. Girl in a Coma are that rare feral band, unaffected by trends, that has managed to stay wild and thrill us at every turn. Exits & All the Rest, their 4th album out November 1 on Blackheart Records, is the most heart-stopping turn yet.

    Caveman

    Caveman

In the songs on Caveman’s debut album, “Coco Beware,” there’s always something flickering and hovering within the mix. It’s a corona of reverb or distortion, or perhaps a sustained keyboard chord or a looped noise, or an unwavering one-chord strum. It’s different from the aggressive, barbed-wire distortion of shoegaze rock, murkier and more vaporous: present but not overwhelming, neither hostile nor welcoming, just a fact of the soundscape, a blur at the horizons. – The New York Times

    HOWLER-PALACE

Howler is the brain child of Jordan Gatesmith. The 19 year old picked up the guitar only 5 years ago, and learned quickly. After being the guitarist for several regionally successful projects, Jordan felt like it was time for his voice to be heard, and wanted to write and sing his own songs. He has always had a natural affinity towards early 60’s American rock and pop songs, as well as 80’s punk, he makes these influences his own, and to good effect, the bands’ first EP has been picked up for release by Rough Trade.

    The Jezabels

    with: Benjamin Francis Leftwich

    Jezabels-Palace

Australian quartet the Jezabels shimmer with their anthemic, empowering approach to indie pop. Comprised of singer Hayley Mary, guitarist Samuel Lockwood, pianist/keyboardist Heather Shannon, and drummer Nik Kaloper, the group formed in 2007 after meeting at the University of Sydney, though Mary and Lockwood knew each other previously, having both grown up in Byron Bay. Taking a socially aware stance, the band name derived from Mary’s perspective that Bible character Jezebel was misunderstood or misrepresented. Their first musical offering came in the form of an EP trilogy, beginning with 2009’s The Man Is Dead and She’s So Hard, rounded out a year later with Dark Storm. Propelled by a surprising combination of pop hooks and epic, moody energy, The Man Is Dead landed on the CMJ Top 200 chart in summer 2009, the first of many accolades for the band: by 2010, She’s So Hard helped the band net two Independent Music Awards nods; the song “Hurt Me” was featured as an iTunes Australia song of the week, and Tegan and Sara tapped the quartet to open for them on their spring tour down under. Full-length debut Prisoner arrived digitally the next fall, with Rolling Stone spotlighting the track “Trycolour.” Mom + Pop is slated to issue the physical version of Prisoner in early 2012, just in time for the band’s main stage set at the Coachella music and arts festival. – All Music

    Quintron & Miss Pussycat

    Quintron

“Quintron has been making genre-defying noise and “Swamp-Tech” dance music in New Orleans for over fifteen years. The majority of his 13 full-length albums have the psychedelic soul of New Orleans garage R&B filtered through a tough distorted Hammond B-3 and a cache of self-made electronic instruments. He has also released strange soundscapes based on inner-city field recordings of frogs and neighborhood ambiance. Quintron regards his most significant creation to be his patented instrument called the THE DRUM BUDDY, a light activated analog synthesizer that creates murky, low-fidelity, rhythmic patterns. ACID-PALACE

Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Paraiso U.F.O. (and subsequent offshoots) is a Japanese psychedelic band, the core of which formed in 1995. The band is led by guitarist Kawabata Makoto and early in their career featured many musicians, but by 2004 the line-up had coalesced with only a few core members and frequent guest vocalists. The band has released albums frequently on a number of international record labels as well as the Acid Mothers Temple family record label, which was established in 1998 to document the activities of the whole collective.

    Rocky Votolato

    ROCKY-PALACE1

Seattle musician Rocky Votolato is a soft-spoken, very kind, very hard-working father of two, born in rural Texas and raised in the Pacific Northwest indie scene (where he fronted the acclaimed rock band Waxwing). In his decade-plus life as a songwriter and musician he has sought to articulate something essential about life, writing songs that seem to have been scratched into a boxcar wall by a worn-out and lonesome ghost. His gravelly, sandpaper smooth voice and introspective lyrics mark him as that most rare of punk-rocker-turned-acoustic-troubadours: Votolato writes graceful, understated, human, unpretentious songs, demonstrating that simplicity is still a viable option for accomplished songwriters.
